Lisbon
Zoo or Jardim Zoologico in Portugal, was founded in 1884 though
moved to it's present location in Sete Rios Quinta das
Laranejeiras in 1905. The zoo is set over 16 hectares
and is home to over 2,000 animals, reptiles and birds.
The
Jardim Zoologico is open to everyone and is not only a
great opportunity to see many fascinating species up
close, but a chance to marvel at the mature gardens in
which the zoo is situated. |
|
Although
one of the best ways to explore the zoo is by foot,
there are also some less tiring ways to enjoy the many
attractions. Within the Zoo's boundaries there is a
cable car, which once you have paid your entrance fee,
is free to ride.
The
cable car passes around the entire zoo above all of the
enclosures and gives you a bird's eye view. Each car
holds two people and starts and finishes by the
children's petting zoo. However for those of you who
don't like heights, there is a tourist train which wends
it's way through the leafy lanes of the zoo. |

The Zoo also runs
presentations throughout the day where you can get close
to the animals. Daily shows, which do vary, include the
Dolphin Display, Feeding of the Sea Lions, Pelican
Feeding, Enchanted Forest Free Flying Birds and the
Reptile House. A
new addition to the Zoo is Animax, a combination of
restaurants, cafes and fairground rides situated at the
entrance of the Jardims Zoologico. Entry to this area of
the zoo is free of charge, though rides do have a fee. |
