Documents Needed to Get Married in Portugal

Same Sex Marriages in Portugal

If you've decided as a foreign national the place you want to get married is Portugal, then there are various procedures and documents you must provide to ensure your Big Day runs smoothly and is not hampered by bureaucracy and red tape which is unfortunately renowned in Portugal.

Foreign Nationals

If you are a foreign national (born outside of Portugal and the Azores) then you will need to provide copies of your passports (or Identity cards); Non Impediment Certificates and your birth certificates. All of these documents must be translated into Portuguese and be recognised at your  embassy in Portugal .

If you have been previously married and subsequently divorced you will also be asked for these certificates (also duly translated and accredited by your embassy or by the Portuguese consulate). If you are under the age of 18 years old then you would also need parental permission.
