Whether
you prefer hill hiking, pastoral rambles, an urban
architectural tour or a stroll along the beach,
Portugal is
able provide it all for walkers.
If you
are looking to book a
holiday to Portugal
with one of the many
walking holiday companies then you
will have no end of choice, as there are many offering a
variety of packages, some of which include accommodation
as well as scheduled, guided tours.
However
if you are
living in Portugal
and want to discover more of the country on foot,
utilising specific holiday walking companies could prove
expensive quiet quickly. Many of
Portugal's
district councils have produced rudimentary walking
guides to help you discover the areas in which they are
located.
However, if you are visiting Portugal on
holiday and are not familiar with the language, then
setting out on a three hour hike with only a small
pamphlet in a foreign language could be a little
worrying, especially if you are unfamiliar with the
area.
In some
areas of
Portugal there
are expatriate groups which organise a variety of
walking tours, for a small fee, though these usually are
large groups with varied ability. If you prefer not to
be on a large ramble and like to walk at your own pace,
without being chivvied on, then why not take a look at
Truemans' Treks in Portugal.
Written
and photographed by
central Portugal
residents John and Sue Trueman, 30 year veteran walkers,
they provide Wainwright-like maps and a what to watch
out for tour of some of the areas they have explored in
Portugal. Each
month there will be a new walk to ensure you have time
to take your own trek. |
